España presenta su candidatura en los mundiales de Santander 2014 ISAF Sailing World Championships

Un total de 65 regatistas conforman la flota nacional con opciones a medalla en las 10 clases olímpicas

El Director de Preparación Olímpica de la Real Federación Española de Vela, Toni Ripoll, ha presentado esta mañana en el Salón de Actos de la Escuela Náutica de Santander, el listado oficial de los miembros del seleccionado nacional que representarán a España en el próximo campeonato del mundo de clases olímpicas, Santander 2014 ISAF Sailing World Championships.
En un acto arropado por buena parte del equipo nacional, estuvieron acompañándole en la mesa el bimedallista olímpico y vigente campeón de Europa de la clase Nacra 17, Iker Martínez; la campeona olímpica y ganadora de la semana de Kiel en FX, Támara Echegoyen; la también campeona olímpica Ángela Pumariega y regatista de 470; la pentacampeona del mundo de RS:X, Blanca Manchón; y los miembros del Equipo Olímpico Español de Vela, Alicia Cebrián, en Láser Radial; y Jesús Rogel, en Láser Standard.

La campeona del mundo en 470, Berta Betanzos y proel de Echegoyen en FX; los entrenadores Jorge Angulo, Roy Alonso, Santiago López Vázquez, Pepe Lís, o el meteorólogo del equipo, Miguel Sánchez-Cuenca, han reforzado la presentación en Santander.

Un total de 65 regatistas conforman la flota nacional, un compacto equipo formado por campeones olímpicos, del mundo o continentales. Su base, solidamente estructurada por la experiencia de Ripoll, sienta sus constitución bajo los resultados del Ranking Nacional, Resultados de Regata de Selección y Criterio Técnico.

Tres son las seleccionadas en Láser Radial; otros tantos en Láser Standard; tres competirán en Finn; cinco en RS:X Femenino; siete en RS:X Masculino; seis tándem en 470 Femenino; siete en 470 Femenino; cinco lo harán en 49er; cuatro en FX y otros cinco en Nacra 17.

Ripoll manifestó sentirse orgulloso de este equipo del que asegura se obtendrán buenos resultados en este mundial. A este respecto mostró su preocupación por la reciente lesión de Tara Pacheco. Iker Martínez aseguró que dentro del seno del equipo, se sienten esperanzados. Sin embargo él prefiere ser más realista y aceptar en un 95% la retirada del mundial, porque a 15 días de su inauguración, ve difícil la recuperación de Pacheco.

El campeonato del Mundo ORC 2014 divide la flota en clases.

La flota récord, con más de 160 entradas, se dividirá en tres clases, con varias subdivisiones para mejorar la calidad de la regata.

 

Después de un cuidadoso análisis de la actual flota con más de 160 entradas procedentes de 18 países, los organizadores de Kieler Yacht- Club (KYC) y el Offshore Racing Congress (ORC) han decidido dividir la flota en las siguientes clases para el Campeonato del Mundo ORC 2014:

Clase A: ≥ 420,0 y < 550.0 seg/mi GPH
Clase B: ≥ 550,0 y < 615.0 seg/mi GPH
Clase C: ≥ 615,0 y ≤ 700,0 seg/mi GPH

En la actualidad, esto sitúa a unos 30 barcos en la clase A, 65 barcos en la clase B, y 65 barcos en la clase C. El número exacto no se determinará hasta que se cierren de las inscripciones el 28 de julio, y todos los barcos hayan presentado sus últimos certificados ORCi del 2.014 para su inscripción.

Las fechas de este evento, el Campeonato de la ISAF, están programadas para el 2 al 9 de agosto de 2014.

Debido al gran número de entradas en las Clase B y C, y debido también al deseo de mantener unas líneas de salida y cursos de regata de un tamaño manejable, los manager de la regata, Eckart Reinke y Stefan Kunstmann, también han decidido dividir aún más a estas clases para las regatas que se celebrarán en dos áreas separadas del campeonato: durante los primeros cuatro días programados, los barcos de cada grupo de clase regatearán entre sí, utilizándose los resultados para determinar los grupos finales oro y plata en cada clase.

Los competidores del grupo Oro en cada clase estarán compitiendo por el trofeo del campeonato. Un esquema similar a éste se utilizó con éxito en la gran flota de la Clase B en el Campeonato del Mundo Audi ORCi en Helsinki 2012.

"Lograr el equilibrio adecuado entre el tamaño de la flota y garantizar la calidad de la competición para todos los participantes es un verdadero reto para una flota de este tamaño", comenta el presidente de evento KYC Ecky von der Mosel. "Pero, afortunadamente, con la experiencia que tenemos de las flotas con las que trabajamos cada año en Kieler Woche y con el conocimiento ORC que tienen los distintos tipos de barcos que están en regata y los formatos utilizados en los dos últimos campeonatos del mundo, estamos seguros de que las regatas se disputarán de la forma más justa posible para todos los participantes y los managers de la regata".

Team CEEREF crowned RC44 World Champions.

In a thrilling end to the RC44 season, three races saw the leaderboard at the Calero Marinas RC44 World Championships turn inside out. Going into the final day Ironbound and Team Aqua had occupied the top of the leaderboard. Just nine points separated first from sixth, but after some exhilarating racing from the 15 strong RC44 fleet it was Team CEEREF who were crowned World Champions in Lanzarote. Peninsula Petroleum leapt from sixth to second. Team Aqua finished third and were crowned RC44 Championship Tour winners for the third consecutive year.

Synergy’s Tactician Ed Baird described the conditions in Lanzarote as, “the most difficult venue on the tour” and “just crazy”. The teams were tested with different conditions in each race, a building breeze reached 15 knots by the series decider. Team Aqua had all but won the 2013 RC44 Championship Tour going into the final day, but they were aiming for the treble; the Match Racing Trophy, Fleet Racing Trophy and the World Championships, a feat not achieved in the RC44 fleet to date.

The first race kicked off on time. Synergy wanted the right and it paid. Artemis Racing were over at the start and also headed right up the first beat, pulling their way back through the fleet. Gazprom Youth Challenge were also over early, but made a massive comeback. Overnight leaders Ironbound and Team Aqua were alone on the left side of the course, it didn’t pay and the pair trailed the fleet at the top mark. Synergy made no mistakes, leading from start to finish, moving Valentin Zavadnikov’s team into contention for the world title.

Slovenia’s Team CEEREF followed their third place in race one with a win in the second. Leading from the start, they fended off a late charge by Team Italia who banged the right hand corner on the second windward leg to pull up to second. Peninsula Petroleum slotted in a third place leaving the points going into the series decider incredibly tight. The Slovenian team now had a two-point lead over Team Aqua, everyone down to sixth placed Peninsula Petroleum still in with a chance of lifting the trophy.

With the fleet bunched at the committee boat, Team Aqua and Peninsula Petroleum got the best starts. Michele Ivaldi made the call for CEEREF to tack straight off to the right, Peninsula playing the left whilst Aqua stayed safe in the middle. At the top mark Peninsula lead, Aqua fourth with the Slovenian team back in thirteenth. CEEREF made gains on the next two legs to round in front of Chris Bake’s team at the final windward mark, Aqua made the early gybe in search of places, but it didn’t pay. Team CEEREF’s sixth place was enough to hand Igor Lah’s team the World Championship title. Vasco Vascotto kept owner John Bassadone in front of the fleet, to take the final race win, and with it second place in Lanzarote for Peninsula Petroleum.

Igor Lah has missed the last two RC44 events due to work commitments, the World Championship win, was a great return to the class. “It’s what we were aiming for! To become World Champions is not a small thing. I am very proud of my team and of all the guys that did a great job to make it happen. We knew we were well prepared, so today was a matter of everything finally counting at the same time.”

In the overall 2013 RC44 Championship Tour, Team Aqua were again crowned Champions for the third successive year. Synergy Russian Sailing team finished their season in second, with Katusha third.

Tour winners, Team Aqua, have again proved themselves to be the most consistent team on the RC44 Circuit, but were clearly disappointed not to win the World’s. “We’ve had a great season again but it would have been nice to crown it off with the Worlds, they continue to be elusive for another year so maybe next year we will come back and fight again. We knew it was going to be tough and we knew that we had to go out and sail well and frankly we didn’t sail well enough to win. All things considered it’s a good result it just would have been nice to crown it.” Chris Bake, owner, Team Aqua.

The RC44 season will start in the Caribbean next February, where the class will be welcomed by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda in Virgin Gorda. The full RC44 calendar will be announced by the end of November.

Ironbound the early leaders in Lanzarote.

As the RC44’s cruised out of Puerto Calero Marina, past the SCA team base and some of the Mini Transat fleet limping in for repairs, Race Officer Peter ‘Luigi’ Reggio was not hopeful the wind gods were going to play ball on the opening day of the Calero Marina’s RC44 World Championships. 

The wind fluctuated between 4-10 knots throughout the day, but the race team did a great job slotting in two good races. David Murphy’s Ironbound proved to be the most consistent player and there were race wins for Russia’s Bronenosec and Team CEEREF. 

A fight for the pin end of the line in the opening race saw three boats, Nika, MAG Racing and Peninsula Petroleum, called over early. Krill Podolsky on his newly branded Gazprom Youth Challenge won the pin and headed left, along with them Brosenosec and Ironbound. The shift favoured the trio who rounded with Brosenosec leading, Gazprom second and Ironbound third. An early gybe by Krill Podolsky didn’t pay, letting Ironbound into second by the leeward gate. With no further place changes in the top three, Vladimir Liubomirov’s Brosenosec took their first RC44 race win since joining the class in June.

After an hour’s delay waiting for the wind to reappear, race two started in 8 knots. The 15-strong fleet managed one general recall before getting away cleanly. Ironbound looked strong in the middle of the fleet up the first beat, but it was Igor Lah’s Team CEEREF, coming in from the right, who crossed ahead of the American’s to take the lead. A tight mark rounding saw Peninsula Petroleum and Katusha both penalised for trying to fit into a space they maybe shouldn’t have.

At the bottom of the run Team CEEREF took the left hand gate allowing Ironbound to close, a tight cross at the top of the second beat saw the Slovenian team tack on top of Ironbound to take control. The battle for third was equally tight between Nika and Artemis Racing, Vladimir Prosikhin held off the Swedish team for the first lap, only to succumb on the second windward leg. Finishing positions Team CEEREF, Ironbound, Artemis Racing, Nika.

Igor Lah has returned to the fleet for the first time since May for the World Championships, and they are definitely in it to win it. “The World Championships are only once a year so it is a big challenge, there are several teams here that could win it, but we are also one of them.”

With two second places Ironbound sits at the top of the overnight leaderboard on four-points, Team CEEREF and Artemis Racing tied with eight-points in second and third. David Murphy couldn’t have been happier with the team’s performance. “Yesterday we were the goats and today we are the kings, two seconds feels pretty good. It’s great having tactician Paul (Goodison) onboard, he’s patient, has good insight and makes good decisions all the way around the course. Our challenge is to stay in the pack, we want to be top five top six every race and if we can do that when we get to the end of the regatta we will be in the hunt.”

Daniel and Jose Juan Calero have re-joined the fleet after an 18-month break. Jose Juan won the battle of the brothers, a tenth and seventh place leaves them in tenth overall. “It’s amazing to have the fleet back, the class gives a lot of life to the Marina and for us it’s a tradition now. I’m really happy with the team and motivated after our second race finish, especially in such a competitive class. Anything can happen in any race and if you make even the smallest mistake you lose three or four places. I think the race committee did an extremely good job; Peter Reggio really knows Puerto Calero and picked the two best moments of the day to race.”

Racing continues at the Calero Marina World Championships through to Sunday 24th November.

Team Aqua wins the 2013 RC44 Match Racing Championship

Returning to Lanzarote for the sixth time since the RC44 class was conceived in 2007, the final leg of the 2013 Championship Tour kicked off with season’s match racing finale in Puerto Calero. 

The competition was tight with just four points separating the top four teams. The race committee managed to squeeze nine flights into a squally 10-20 knots day, that saw some big names tumbled off the podium. Team Aqua’s owner Chris Bake took the helm for the final match race day, Cameron Appleton calling the shots. After a slow start to the season the team had worked their way up the leaderboard, taking a two-point advantage over Katusha going into the final event.

The leaders didn’t get off to the best of starts losing their first match of the day to Peninsula Petroleum, overstanding the pin end layline at the start. But the British flagged team pulled straight back, winning their next four races, enough to hand Team Aqua the 2013 RC44 Match Race Championship, a title they last held in 2011.

Chris Bake has shared the match race helm with tactician Cameron Appleton throughout the season:  “I’ve been trying to do a little bit more match racing because it helps to learn the boat and it’s a different dynamic, the fact that we’ve been able to hold off the competition and take the win is a really good feeling. The team makes it a lot easier for me, between Cameron (Appleton) and the rest of the boys, who keep telling me to focus only on the boat speed and it’s worked. You step onto the boat and it is as if the rest of the world doesn’t matter except the boat and the boat speed.”

Behind Team Aqua the points were tight. Synergy Russian Sailing Team, started the day in third place, one-point behind Katusha. Six races sailed and six wins, including an all important victory over Katusha, moved the defending champions up to second. Match race helm, Ed Baird was proud of the all-Russian team’s performance against a strong international field. “Our day was fantastic the guys did a terrific job and we won all of our matches. I think it’s the best day we’ve ever had in match racing. You can look back at the season and see the point where we had a little bit of bad luck but you can also see we’ve had a couple of regattas where we’ve done really well and we’re fortunate to be on the podium and in the top of this competitive fleet of boats. I’m very proud and excited for the Synergy team.”

Another team enjoying the conditions in Lanzarote was Artemis Racing. With owner Torbjorn Tornqvist at the helm and double Olympic gold medallist Iain Percy calling tactics the Swedish team also won their six races, including a head to head with Team Aqua in their final race of the day. The team’s clean sheet moved them up into third place and onto the podium for the match race season.

Torbjorn Tornqvist clearly enjoyed his day in Lanzarote. “We had a great day today and I wish we had a few more like today throughout this season. It’s fantastic to be on the helm with excellent team work, conditions and starts. You could go on sailing forever on days like today. ” This was the first match racing event Tornqvist has sailed with new tactician Iain Percy, the combination is clearly working well. “Iain is a great asset to have on any boat; this is our second regatta together so he’s getting a feel for the boat which is really starting to show now. I’m very confident in our team and look forward with a great deal of optimism for next year.”

Katusha had led the match race standings for the first three events of the season, heading into the final event they still had a shot at knocking Team Aqua off the top spot.  Three wins and losses in Lanzarote was not enough to keep Andy Horton and the team on the podium, finishing the season a disappointing fourth overall.

The Calero Marinas RC44 World Championships now begins. Four days of fleet racing will see the 15 teams compete for the world championship trophy, and to see who will be crowned 2013 RC44 Champions. With one title already won, Team Aqua is now looking at the treble, as the classes most successful owner, Chris Bake said after racing. “There is going to be some tight competition for the worlds, it’s something that has eluded us for the last couple of years. It would certainly be nice to try and win that title, but I don’t want to get too obsessive about it and spoil our luck, I’ve just got to let it happen.”

Racing continues through to the 24th November in Puerto Calero.

Dos equipos españoles en la línea de salida de Puerto Calero.

Puerto Calero, Lanzarote, acogerá del 20 al 24 de noviembre el tramo final del RC44 Championship Tour 2013. Con tres títulos en juego, los 15 equipos participantes estarán luchando para ser coronados campeón del mundo de RC44, con los títulos del RC44 Championship Tour y Match Race todavía por decidir.

Chris Bake ha compartido el timón del Team Aqua con Cameron Appleton en las regatas de match race de este año. La celebración de los round robin el primer día de cada evento RC44 permite a los propietarios pilotar los barcos. De cara a la última jornada de match race en Lanzarote, el Team Aqua intentará mantener la ventaja de dos puntos sobre Katusha, patroneado por el gran navegante Andy Horton. Los campeones y actuales defensores del match race, el Synergy Russian Sailing Team, que están un punto más atrás tienen al vigente ganador de la Copa América, Ed Baird, a la rueda.

En los próximos cuatro días de regatas de flota el Team Aqua está situado en la pole position para ganar el  RC44 Championship Tour por tercer año consecutivo. Tienen una ventaja de tres puntos sobre el Katusha de Gennadi Timchenko, con el Synergy de Valentin Zavadnikov en el tercer lugar después de su victoria en la penúltima prueba de la temporada en Cascais, Portugal. Una tercera posición en Lanzarote será suficiente para que el equipo del británico Chris Bake gane su tercer título, pero nada está garantizado en esta flota one-design.

Después de terminar en un decepcionante quinto lugar en Cascais, el táctico del Team Aqua, Cameron Appleton, reconoce que tienen que estar muy en forma para ganar en Puerto Calero. "Va a ser difícil, esta es una clase con unos potentes equipos, todos con los mejores regatistas, algunos de los mejores del mundo. Tenemos que prepararnos bien y navegar de forma inteligente pero nada está garantizado. Lanzarote ofrece unas condiciones muy difíciles pero la cálida bienvenida que la familia Calero ofrece a todos los regatistas hace que sea un lugar muy especial para la regata".

El Peninsula Petroleum es el actual defensor del Campeonato del Mundo, el cual ganó el título del 2012 en Rovinj, Croacia. El equipo con base en Gibraltar, situado en la quinta posición del Championship Tour, propiedad de John Bassadone y la regular tripulación de Vasco Vascotto buscan poner fin a este año en lo más alto posible. "No tenemos un plan para defender el campeonato. No creo que podamos con el gran nivel de esta clase. Nuestro plan será mejorar donde lo necesitemos, trabajar más duro que nunca y disfrutar. Luego veremos donde terminamos", explica Bassadone.

Con el RC44 Tour de regreso a Lanzarote por sexta vez, los hermanos Daniel y José Juan Calero se incorporarán al circuito de regatas compitiendo en sendos equipos totalmente  españoles.

Puerto Calero Residence Club Grey será patroneado por Daniel Calero con el olímpico en 470 Onán Barreiros y el actual miembro del equipo olímpico español de Laser, Javier Hernández, como parte de la tripulación.

Daniel Calero no puede esperar. "Es fantástico tener la clase RC44 de nuevo en Lanzarote para los Campeonatos del Mundo. Puerto Calero es uno de los mejores lugares para practicar vela en el sur de Europa donde los regatistas son capaces de sacar el máximo provecho de los vientos alisios del Atlántico NE. Estamos preparados para estar de nuevo en el agua con la flota y esperamos poder vencer a algunos de nuestros viejos amigos!"

El Campeonato del Mundo de RC44 comienza mañana miércoles 20 de noviembre con el Match Race seguido de cuatro días de regatas de flota. Los trofeos se entregarán el domingo 24 de noviembre.

McDougall + McConaghy World Championship 2013, Clase Moth

El estadounidense Gulari Bora se corona Campeón del Mundo de 2013 de la clase Moth en Hawaii.

Bora es el primer americano  en 54 años en vencer dos veces mientras que los australianos Outerridge y Babbage completaron el podio final. 

 
Una tormenta madrugadora quiso saludar a los 80 regatistas del McDougall + McConaghy World Championship 2013 de la clase Moth, mientras preparaban sus embarcaciones de fibra de carbono para volar en el último día de la competición. La lluvia y las nubes trajeron consigo un efecto secundario desafortunado, el enfriamiento de las montañas Koolau de Oahu y el final de la brisa térmica de días pasados, lo que podría haber permitido un fantástico último día de regatas por el título Mundial de la clase Moth (polilla).

Después de algo más de 3 horas de espera en el Kaneohe Yacht Club boat park, el oficial de regata Tom Pochereva tocaba la bocina que indicaba el final de la competición y, en cuestión de segundos, una docena de regatistas estadounidenses levantaron a Bora Gulari en el aire y lo arrojaron a la piscina como ceremonia para celebrar el título de Campeón del Mundo de 2013.

Gulari se convierte de este modo en el primer bicampeón americano de Moth desde 1959, ya que ganó el Campeonato Mundial de 2009 en Cascade Locks, Oregón. "Realmente todavía no lo tengo asumido", comentó Gulari. "Lo que si se con certeza es que sin Anthony, George, Brad, y sin todo el equipo de tierra del Smoth de EE.UU., nunca habría sido campeón del mundo por segunda vez".

Gulari atribuye su éxito a su Moth Mach 2 que, dice, "es una plataforma perfecta para este tipo de navegación", combinado con el efecto acumulativo de las docenas de pequeños cambios en el barco. "Hemos estado trabajando durante un año en Detroit, afinando y cambiando cosas poco a poco hasta que quedaron perfectas", dijo Gulari. También le dio mucha importancia a su juego de velas y agregó que "North Sails y específicamente el especialista en velería Chris Williams habían preparado un diseño de vela muy potente para esta zona. Puedo decir que nunca he navegado con una vela más rápido desde que compré mi primer Moth".

En esta clase tambien tenemos representación española a cargo de Pablo Arandia del RCN de Valencia, que al final del campeonato ocupó un más que meritorio puesto 24 (de 80 participantes) con 176 puntos por delante de skippers de la talla del mítico navegante frances Loick Peyron o del australiano David Lister, entre otros.
